How Does Meditation Work?

Meditation is the practice of gently training our attention - learning to notice what’s happening in our mind and body, without judgement.

But for many people, traditional meditation instructions can feel overwhelming. Being asked to sit in silence, close your eyes, chant or control your breath can trigger anxiety rather than calm.

That’s where my approach is different.

Meditation with me isn’t about “emptying your mind”.

I use clear guidance, sound, structure and choice to help your nervous system feel safe enough to settle. Rather than forcing stillness, we work with your body and mind - gradually teaching them that it’s okay to slow down.

Prices start from £10, with discounted passes available.

Explore the Benefits of Meditation

Meditation isn’t about “emptying your mind.” Even just 10–15 minutes of gentle, guided meditation has been shown to calm the nervous system, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, and improve focus and emotional regulation - all backed by modern neuroscience.

It’s not about switching off - it’s about learning how to meet your experience with more steadiness and ease.

Benefits of regular meditation include:

✔ Reduced stress and anxiety

✔ Better sleep and deeper rest

✔ Improved emotional regulation

✔ Increased focus and mental clarity

✔ Greater resilience during challenging times

✔ A calmer nervous system response

✔ Feelings of peace and balance

✔ A stronger sense of self-awareness

✔ Feeling less overwhelmed by your thoughts

✔ Greater self-compassion and patience

Let’s use meditation to give you practical tools you can apply in everyday life.

The Most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Meditation

However, I know that life sometimes has other plans, so if you can’t attend a class, you can transfer your booking to an alternative date, provided you get in touch at least 24 hours before the class starts.

  • I do!

Meditation is an excellent idea for zen dos, corporate retreats, charity wellbeing events and special occasions.

What To Expect

  • Each session is gently guided and clearly structured, so you always know what’s coming next.

You’ll be guided through a series of short meditation practices using a mix of techniques such as mindfulness, contemplation, mantra and sound. Sessions may include periods of stillness, listening to sound or music and simple awareness practices - all with plenty of reassurance and options throughout.

You’re always in control of your experience. You’re welcome to keep your eyes open, sit in a chair, move, take breaks or opt out of any practice that doesn’t feel right for you.

  • The short answer is… whatever you like!

The comfier and cosier the clothing, the better, so choose something you’d have a nap in. Yoga mats, padded mats, blankets, bolsters and pillows are provided, but feel free to bring your own if you’d prefer.

  • Everyone experiences meditation differently.

You might feel calm, grounded and relaxed. You may notice a sense of mental clarity, lightness or emotional release. Some people feel energised, others feel ready for a good night’s sleep.

There’s no “right” way to feel - whatever shows up is okay. Sessions always end with grounding, so you leave feeling settled and supported.

Other Questions

  • That’s completely normal. Meditation isn’t about stopping thoughts - it’s about noticing them, without getting swept away.

  • No. You’re always welcome to keep your eyes open, pick a static spot on the floor, look at my instruments or a tree outside the window.

  • I don’t use counted or controlled breathing in beginner sessions. You’re guided to breathe at a pace that feels natural to you.

  • My sessions are secular and taught in everyday English, without chanting or religious language. Everyone is welcome.

  • Meditation can bring things to the surface - but you’re always in control. You can opt out, pause, ground yourself or shift focus at any time.

  • That’s valuable information!

Together, we explore what works for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here.

  • No experience is needed at all.

My sessions are designed especially for beginners and for people who’ve struggled with meditation in the past.

Clear guidance, sound, structure and choice are built in to support you every step of the way.

  • Meditation is a gentle practice, but it isn’t suitable for everyone in all circumstances.

If you have experienced recent trauma, have a diagnosed mental health condition such as PTSD, bipolar disorder or are currently feeling particularly vulnerable, I recommend getting in touch before booking so we can chat through whether a group session is right for you.

If you’re unsure, please email me at hello@feelingsound.co - I’m always happy to talk things through and help you find the safest option.

It’s completely normal to have questions before attending your first meditation session, and I’m here to answer them all for you. Send me an email, a DM on Instagram, or pop me a note via the contact form and I’ll get right back to you.
